This book was originally published in 1910. It is an expanded version of Rosenstock-Huessy’s dissertation, which forms the first part of the book. The dissertation was originally called Landesfriedensgerichte und Provinzialversammlungen vom neunten bis zwölften Jahrhundert (Heidelberg, 1909.) Modern European civilization was in its formative stages in the years treated by Herzogsgewalt und Friedensschutz. The book explores the written sources left by this formative process and evaluates their historical impact at the time they were written. The book addresses the questions of how peace was established in the western areas, and how law began to function.
